Group29 announced the finalization of its preparation for a conference to address the issues of Kuwait’s stateless “Bedoun” such that it culminates in a solutions paper for the problem.  The Conference will include participants from international human rights organizations, local activists, representatives from the Stateless, political groups, local NGOs, government representatives, representation from the Central System for the Resolution of Status of Illegal Residents, as well as representatives from the embassies of various countries concerned with the issue of statelessness around the world. The Conference will carry the title “The First Conference for the Stateless in Kuwait: Situation and Solution” and will take place in Kuwait on the 15th and 16th of April 2013.

Lama AlOthman, Group29 member, stated “we aim to effect change in the general perspective and clear the confusion around the legal status of the Bedoun, in addition to revealing their real status as “stateless” and not “illegal residents.  The latter term has been used as cover to obscure the issue from the attention of the local and international community.  Both will be represented in the Conference by various organizations, where they will have the opportunity to examine very closely the reality of the issues and the human conditions pertaining to Bedoun, as well as discuss proposals for the resolution of this problem that has been in existence for more than 50 years now.”

AlOthman added “Another key objective of the Conference is to initiate dialogue considered the first of its kind in Kuwait on the issue of the Stateless whereby all parties concerned are brought together to discuss, agree, and collaborate towards the resolution of this issue, most importantly by coming up with an executable solution plan and forming a collaborative follow-through mechanism charged with overseeing the implementation of the solution by the responsible parties.

She also explained that the Conference will present the evolution of the problem, its phases, the different descriptions and nomenclature used to describe the stateless of Kuwait, the policies and decisions that impacted the stateless over the past 50 years, in addition to the deprivation suffered and restrictions imposed on them.

AlOthman indicated that the Conference already has its own twitter account (@StatelessInQ8) for those interested in following its news and proceedings.
